The San Lucas Mission conducts emergency work wherever it is needed, in response to the needs of affected communities. Throughout its history, the San Lucas Mission has responded to many emergency situation, most notably, the 1975 Earthquake, following which the San Lucas Mission was used as a center of response for the lake area.
In 2002 and again in 2005, the San Lucas Mission provided emergency and post/emergency aid and resettlement for four communities affected by landslides. Through these experiences, the Mission has adapted what it does in emergencies and how to respond most effectively.
Most recently, in May 2010, Tropical Storm Agatha swept through Guatemala and destroyed dozens of homes in San Lucas Proper. The Parish continues to improve its response to disasters by working within the existing network of trust and Parish programs, as well as collaborating with local government organizations and non-profit organizations.
The San Lucas Mission approaches its emergency and post emergency response programming through a framework of saving lives, supporting livelihoods and structurally addressing the root causes of disasters.
